1) Medical/Nursing Services What kind of medical care does Ren Ci provide to the needy sick? We provide continuous and intensive medical care to patients who require both short term and long term medical attention. This includes physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psycho-social support and counselling. In addition to clinical and nursing care, Ren Ci also organises a calendar of social events, music therapy, art & craft sessions, entertainment and festive celebrations for the patients. Who are Ren Ci's patients? Ren Ci has a total of 661 in-patient beds (140 Community Hospital beds, 212 Chronic Sick beds, 210 Nursing Home beds and 99 Sub-Acute beds). More than half of them are post-stroke cases. 15% have severe physical disabilities and 30% have a history of mental illness. Most of our patients also come from low-income families who are unable to afford basic medical care. 2) Admissions How do I admit my relative into Ren Ci? All admissions into Ren Ci are by referral. A patient can request for a referral from his/her last attending doctor or speak to a medical social worker attached to that hospital. If you are applying for subsidised rates at Ren Ci, you need to apply through AIC (Agency for Integrated Care). For more information, please call 6355 6495. Under what circumstances will an application for admission into Ren Ci be rejected? While we hope to accomodate to all requests, we are limited by some constraints. 1. Our medical services are not suitable for the patient applying for admission. (E.g. If the patient requires dialysis treatment.) 2. There is no bed vacancy at the time of application for admission. We thank you for your kind understanding. 3) In what ways can I contribute to help the patients of Ren Ci? Financial support As a VWO, Ren Ci depends heavily on government subvention and public donations. Every cent counts towards providing quality care for the patients. How can I contribute? You can make an online contribution using your credit card or donate using your NETS/CashCard at any AXS machines. Volunteering How can I volunteer my services to the hospital? Volunteers have a choice between volunteering for direct Patient Care programmes such as art & craft programmes OR indirect Patient Care programmes such as helping with fund-raising events. Direct Patient Care Working closely with the occupational therapist and physiotherapist programmes are planned to engage the patients in arts and craft, playing games or music therapy. Other times, you may be paired up with the nursing department to assist with the hair cutting or befriending and wheeling patients around after their meals. Indirect Patient Care Even with government subvention and fee collection from the patients; families, it is still not sufficient to cover the operating costs of the hospital. For Ren Ci to sustain its operations, we need to organise charity drive events such as the Ren Ci Charity Show, Food Fiesta and Charity Dinner. Hope to hear from you soon! 4) Miscellaneous Why does manpower costs account for such a large percentage of the hospital’s recurrent operating expenditure? This is because 60% - 70% of our 661 patients suffer from stroke. They are either bed or wheel chair bound and they depend heavily on our care staff for their activities of daily living. Thus, about 75% of our total staff population are clinical staff We also have to abide by the Ministry of Health’s recommended nurse to patient ratio of 1:2. How are staff salaries benchmarked? Our staff salaries are benchmarked against the salary scale of National Council of Social Services as well as market surveys obtained from other hospitals and Voluntary Welfare Organisations.
