SINGAPORE : Ren Ci's S$26 million reserves have not been touched, thanks to a healthy stream of donations and its investments returning to the black.

And the 2,000-strong turnout for Sunday's carnival is fuelling hopes that this annual fundraising event can help the charity hit the S$250,000 target.

Sunday's "FUN-raising" carnival, Ren Ci Vegetarian Food Fiesta 2010, is targeting to raise S$250,000 with its 60 stalls.

The charity nearly dipped into its reserves last year, due to the global financial crisis and the scandal of former Ren Ci Hospital founder Ming Yi being convicted for falsifying payments.

But things are looking up. This year's televised charity show raised some S$7 million, while Ren Ci's volunteers have also increased by 30 per cent from last year to the current 300.

Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, Lui Tuck Yew, who was the Guest-of-Honour at Sunday's Ren Ci Vegetarian Food Fiesta, commented on the support for the charity.

Mr Lui said: "Certainly for Ren Ci, the public has regained confidence. I want to credit not only the management, but also chairman Mr Chua Thian Poh. Over the last three years, he has helped to rebuild Ren Ci Hospital and regain the trust of the public.

"I know the public is fully supportive of the work that it does. And you certainly can see that in terms of the fundraising efforts." - CNA/ms
