Volunteers are an important part of our family!

Do you know that you can help our patients by doing a variety of activites? Such as giving them haircuts, playing their favourite songs on the piano, sewing their torn clothing and many more!

Read our special volunteer story below about Ren Ci's oldest volunteer Madam Lee Chik!

We cordially invite you to be part of our family of volunteers.

Ren Ci’s oldest volunteer Madam Lee Chik

At 77 years old, Madam Lee is the oldest volunteer at Ren Ci Hospital. Yet, she has a heart that is seemingly getting younger. Madam Lee has been a volunteer with Ren Ci’s Aspiration volunteer group since 1996 and actively participates in hairdressing sessions for patients at the Long Term Care and Nursing Home.

Madam Lee, tell us more about yourself and your volunteering experiences.

My family and I moved from Ipoh to Singapore in 1973 and I used to own my own hair salon. To date, I have over 50 years of hairdressing experience. Upon retirement, I continued to provide hairdressing services to my loyal customers from home. In 1996, my friend introduced me to join Ren Ci as a volunteer to provide haircutting services to the residents in Long Term Care and Nursing Home. I am glad my skills can be of help to the patients. I really enjoy the time here as I get to make friends who are from the same hairdressing trade and also stay positive by constantly moving around to talk the patients. Besides Ren Ci, I am also volunteering in several other Charity organisations in Singapore.

Besides volunteering, what activities do you enjoy most in your free time?

I love travelling because it allows me to relax and be close to nature. My biggest enjoyment would be going on trips with fellow volunteers. During our last trip, 160 volunteers went to Johor Bahru. We visited a fruit farm in Desaru and had a really delicious seafood meal. It was really memorable because we were traveling in such a huge group and I manage to bring back lots of delicious fruits too. We had so much fun and I would love to go on more of such trips to bond with my friends and also see beautiful sceneries. Traveling relaxes the mind and spurs me on to help others when I am back.

You are always so energetic and lively. How did you manage to upkeep your jovial attitude and stay young at heart?

Whenever I see the patient, they reminded me how blessed I am. Happiness comes from being contented with what we have. And I believe in giving back to the society. Through the 15 years of volunteering, I have met many volunteers and they have been really accommodating and respectful towards me because of my age. In order to continue serving the community while not bringing any inconvenience to them, I try my best to keep myself healthy and cheerful. This is how I manage to stay young at heart. Volunteering is part of my silver years. I want to volunteer for as long possible.

As the African proverb that goes ‘A village without elderly is like a well without water’, Madam Lee is the undisputed fountain of wisdom and optimism. Her liveliness and vivacity makes her a role model for other volunteers to emulate.

For Individuals
To be a volunteer is really easy. You don't need to have a partner or be in a group. And don't worry if you don't have the skills. There are people here to teach you how to become a good volunteer.

After that, you can choose what you would like to do. Art & Craft, outings, gardening, sewing, etc. … See. It's certainly a great way to make new friends!

For Schools
CIP (Community Involvement Programme)
If you're a student, you would have heard about CIP from your school. It's really interesting to do CIP in Ren Ci.

You and your schoolmates can plan an activity or programme you think will brighten up a patient's life. Like painting the hospital, performing for the patients (magic shows, song and dance etc) or simply helping to prepare our newsletters before they are mailed out to our stakeholders.

So, gather all your schoolmates and tell your school about us, because we would like to hear what bright ideas you've got!

For Organisations
Many companies send their staff to our hospital to be volunteers. Although they are busy with their work, these nice people still make time to plan interesting programmes and activities for our patients. It's like a CIP but for adults.

So you see, volunteering is not only for kids. Even adults can join in the fun as well. There's so much we can do together to bring joy to our patients. Tell your company about us because we welcome you into our family anytime.
